Scat has been successful in some areas, but several factors affect how long it works. Rain will dilute or wash away the scent, and baboons are highly adaptable; when there is no harmful consequence associated with the scent, it becomes a temporary, short-term deterrent.

• Disciplined refuse management and compulsory baboon-proof bins in affected areas are the most important starting points.
• Water pistols or high-pressure hoses.
• Remove outdoor dog-food bowls.
• Remove bird feeders, sugar bottles and bird-feeding tables.
• Pick fruit as soon as it is ripe or nearly ripe.
• Recognise that vegetable and herb gardens attract baboons.

• Dispersing males may display aggression toward troop members or competing males.
• Injured baboons may act aggressively if trapped or threatened.
• Females with young may act defensively in a threatening situation.
• Trying to snatch food back from a baboon may provoke an attack.
• Pets that are trapped or provoke baboons can lead to injuries for both animals.
• Baboons may identify people in urban areas as food providers and snatch items without fear.

An adult baboon can weigh up to 40 kg and is well adapted to use its strength to access food. They can lift sliding doors off tracks, operate handles, force garage doors, smash glass, move heavy garden furniture and much more. Never underestimate a baboon’s strength.

In a natural environment, troop size is self-regulated by food availability within the normal habitat. High-calorie human food can increase a suburban-habituated troop’s size and breeding rate. Researchers suggest that, if birth control were ever considered, males may be more appropriate because female reproductive systems are complex and hormonal changes may affect behavior and hierarchy.
